Installation and build instructions
Batch anaerobic bio digester build:
An anaerobic bio digester is a device or system that breaks down organic materials, such as food waste, grass, leaves, and animal manure, in an oxygen-free environment to produce biogas, which can be used as fuel. A bio gas scrubber (see the "simple gas filter/scrubber" from Unlinked Energy) can also be used to remove toxic hydrogen sulfide from the gas, which makes this gas safe for use indoors.
Building a bio digester (known in this case as a batch anaerobic bio digester) with this adapter is easy. Find a large air tight container with a lid, like a 5 gallon bucket (with a sealing lid), or even a 55 gallon barrel (with a sealing lid or large hatch). Use a drill and a 1 inch hole saw to cut a 1 inch hole into the center of the lid. Then take the main body of the adapter and cote the sealing surface with a thick layer of silicone. Install the adapter to the inside of the lid and then cote the outside with silicone and install the adapter ring over the main body on the outside.
Once the silicone is fully cured, it's ready to make bio gas.
We recommend painting the outside of your bio digester black to help the sun warm its contents.
In order for a bio digester to produce biogas, it's internal temperature must remain between 68*f to 104*f (20*c to 40*c), or for faster, more stable production 95*f to 99*f (35*c to 37*c).
Fill your bio digester with food scraps/waste, spoiled milk and juices (if available), grass, leaves, and animal manure. You're essentially trying to make the most disgusting smoothie you can, so mix it and add water if more liquid is needed. Then connect and seal the lid to your container and connect your low pressure gas storage tank to the bio digester with 3/8 inner diameter (ID) vinyl tubing. If the gas is intended for indoor use, connect a hydrogen sulfide scrubber between the bio digester and storage tank.
This anaerobic bio digester will produce bio gas for up to 3 months. After 3 months, the bio digesters contents can be removed and used as fertilizer, then the bio digester can be refilled, sealed, and production of bio gas will start again.
55 gallon (7.35 cubic foot) Gasometer tank (gas holder) build (for bio gas storage, syn gas storage, etc.):
A gasometer tank (water sealed) is a special two-part tank that uses water to store vaporous gasses. These gas tanks are perfect for use with small syn gas (synthesis gas) generation systems as well as bio gas generation systems (bio digesters) and many other small gas generation systems.
A gasometer tank consists of two parts, the upper "lift" and the lower "reservoir". In this case we can use a 100 gallon portable/collapsible rain barrel (which can be found on Amazon, Walmart, eBay, and many other online stores) as our reservoir, and a 55 gallon plastic barrel (find on Craigslist or Facebook marketplace) as our lift (the 55 gallon barrel should easily fit into the 100 gallon collapsible rain barrel).
Cut the top off the 55 gallon barrel so the top is completely open, and turn it upside down. (note: Some 55 gallon plastic barrels already have an open top, so this step isn't always needed) Then use a drill and a 1 inch hole saw to cut a hole into the center of the bottom of the 55 gallon barrel.
Then take the adapter with the 3/8" barbed fitting, add a thick layer of silicone to the sealing surface, and install it through the inside of the barrel. Add more silicone to the outside of the barrel/adapter and slide/install the adapter ring over the 3/8" barbed fitting.
After the silicone is cured, the supplied 3/8" ID tubing piece and 90 degree barbed fitting (if purchased) can then be installed onto the adapter.
The gasometer tank can now be assembled.
Put the 55 gallon barrel into the 100 gallon barrel/reservoir with the adapter facing up. Then fill the reservoir with water, up to the overflow drain.
The gasometer tank is now ready to hold gas! Use 3/8" inner diameter (ID) flexible tubing to connect a gas production system to the gasometer adapter. We also recommend using a 3/8" barbed on/off valve with this tank (available for purchase), so that once production is over you can shut off the valve and disconnect the supply line if desired.
