Unlinked Energy - Simple gas filter/scrubber
The simple gas filter/scrubber is a simple and affordable device which can be used to filter vaporous gasses. Although this filter can be used with all vaporous gasses, its primary purpose is for use with wood gas, syn gas (synthesis gas), and bio gas production systems (wood gasifiers, pyrolysis devices, and biodigesters). The gas production system supply line connects to the inlet of the filter which pushes the gas to the bottom of the filter. The gasses then move up through the filter media to the top of the filter and through the outlet of the filter, as shown in the included illustration.
This filter can use many different types of filter media for different purposes. The most simple of the filter media is water, which can be used as a filter media for wood gas or syn gas production (fill the filter 90% of the way with water for this application). After the gas is produced and cooled, it can then travel through this filter in order to extract most of the ash, oils, creosote, and other contaminants before heading on to storage or immediate use. If a gas production system is used in freezing temperatures, or for various other applications, filter media such as sand, gravel, wood shavings, charcoal, grass clippings, and many other media options can be used.
Multiple simple gas filters can be used in series if more filtration is needed. If the gas is intended to be compressed into a pressure tank, use of a gasometer tank (gas holder) after filtering is recommended for final filtration of gasses to allow the remaining contaminants to settle out of the gas over time. It is also recommended to dry the gasses before compression.
The simple gas filter/scrubber can also be used as a hydrogen sulfide scrubber for bio gas applications (biodigesters), by loading the filter with iron or steel scraps, steel wool, steel scrubbing pads, and other iron products in order to allow the hydrogen sulfide to chemically react with the iron, creating iron oxide and reducing or removing the toxic hydrogen sulfide from the gas.
